Mental illness

Enghlish: I feel that I want to write about a sensitive subject, apparently it's still a subject that's taboo, mental illness. You can write so much about this subject, and I don't know if all I want to say fits in one post, maybe I can divide it into several posts. Who I am to talk about this subject you may ask? I have been there,  experienced it, lived with it for many years, but now I'm on the right track and is finally feeling good, but the road haven't been easy, quite the opposite. I won't tell you the whole long story, but the relationship with my ex contributed to it, and that I as a newly examined educator ended up at the wrong workplaces, where they  broke me down instead of strengthen me. I felt washed-up and depressed and the only help I got was antidepressant medication. That got me a bit numb and I lost my lust for almost everything. Finally the divorce was final and then the way to happiness could begin. Stubborn as I am, I tried to return to my work, but I almost got washed-out and depressed again. I got other anidepressation medication and got to talk to a counselor only twice.

I began to feel a lot of pain in my back and went to a doctor for that several times. The pain increased with the years and I felt it in more places than the back and eventually I went to  a doctor for it, after a while I got the diagnosis fibromyalgia. I got to meet with a specialist in pain/ache, and he has helped me a lot, he could just look me in the eye and at my posture to understand how I felt that day. With his help and knowledge I got the right medication, physiotherapy, warmwater-training, and I also got to attend an acceptanscourse in KBT. Thank's to him and my own persistence I'm finally feeling really good. I can really be open about this and I could wrote so much more, but the post will be too long.

I think it's a shame that we don't talk enough about mental illness in our society today. Why is it still taboo in year 2012?? I thought we had come a longer way than that. Or it's just beacuse I'm so open with this and don't have any problem to talk openly about it, but so many still think's it shameful or too hard to talk about it. I wish with all my heart that this could change, I think that when you can talk about what you've been through, you are strong, it's nothing to be ashamed about, you have probably been strong for too long, that's why many of us falls apart. Since I was a little girl, I have always been "Ms Talented", it has been my way to be seen and to get credit for it. It's still there, but now I know that I don't have to show off and to be so good at everything all the time. I am GOOD!
I feel fine today, I'm happy about my life, but I still can have bad days as anyone else. I'm so glad that I don't need antidepressation medication anymore, however I still have to live with my painkillers for the rest of my life. I've tried to cut down on them, but it's hard to manage without them.
I'd like to hear your opinions and feelings about mental illness. Have you been through it? Why are we talking so little about it in year 2012? What can we do to change it?

  2. Ann-Sofie, we all deal with our problems differently – and I am luck because I’m able to live out my feeling and frustration. My mum had depressions for a long time of her when she was 40-70
and I could see how tough that was. Have a friend that gets depressions very autumn and spring – and she has explained that it’s like being in a big black hole and she has to take herself out of there, it’s like a desert walk.
I have and I had my bad days and moments too – especially under my cancer treatments – but somehow I manage to get through that – I feel sorry for myself for a couple of hours, then enough is enough. Also my humor has saved my sorry ass.
I think the mental illness is very big today and the sad thing is that even kids and teens suffers from it – and help is needed. But as my mum said to her doctor after years on Valium – I don’t need to become calmer – I need to be feel happy.
So sorry, to read about your pain and problems – pain can drive anyone to madness. I know because before they found my tumor I had such pain in my hips – could hardly walk and didn’t nearly sleep.

You are so write we should talk about how we feel .. and it helps. If it hadn’t been for FB and my friends there during my treatment time – I doubt that I would be in the mental state as I’m today. Nothing to be ashamed of.

    1. Yeah you really had tough times Viveka. I can understand that you had sad and hard times, who wouldn't in your situation? Yes friends can get you through tough times, so we have to take care of our really good friends. Humour is important, I can joke and laugh about quite much I think and that is also one way to get better.
Glad to hear that you have friends that has been there for you through your treatment. I'm happy that I got to know you through our blogs.
      Take care Viveka!

  3. Ann-Sofie ... thanks for your kind words - we all feel sorry for ourselve at time and if we can't feel sorry for ourselves - we can't feel sorry for others.

Strange I get notice from this blog - but not the other. Have to look into that.
